Bio & History

The first real post here on Squat Eat Sleep is going to go into detail about my background and why I started this blog.

About Me

I am about to graduate with my Masters degree in Safety Management.  Then Ill be looking into a career in Risk Management.  I have been lifting seriously for about the past 5 years.  My passion during the first 3 years was bodybuilding.  I planned to compete in the NPC Ohio regionals competition back in 2010.  I quickly discovered however that I HATED dieting like a bodybuilder. I think I lasted 3 weeks on the pre-contest diet before I said screw it . So I looked around for another related avenue to fix my lifting obsession.

Entering Powerlifting

Eventually I found powerlifting and Jim Wendler's 5/3/1 program. I was amazed at the simplicity of the program.  Find your training max and hammer the big lifts.  His program was pretty much idiot proof.  I believe my first training maxes were 300 for the squat, 225 for the bench, 315 for the deadlift, and 140 for the press. I started 5/3/1 in August of 2010. The program worked pretty good for the first 9 months or so.  About July or so of 2011 I  felt this urge to compete so I looked around for a powerlifting competition.

I can still remember my first thought when finally deciding to enter a powerlifting competition  "So I can eat like a piece of shit and lift a shit ton of weight?" Most of the advice I heard was to not worry about making weight for your first competition.  I took this to mean eat whatever the hell I wanted to eat.     At the time thats what I thought powerlifting was.  I decided to do the 2011 NASA West Virginia Regionals.  I weighed in at 199.  I missed the 198 pound weight class by 1 pound.  I went 7 for 9 at that meet.  I  ended the meet with a 330 squat, 303 bench, and 466 deadlift.  Hardly earth shattering for my weight class.  In fact, it was pretty pathetic.  I was however happy with the 466 deadlift as I never realized how long meets took.  I still won my weight class but as anyone who has done a powerlifiting meet can attest to, thats hardly worth bragging about.

Part 2 later today
